Sometimes I
wonder if the Abbott Government can be classified as being part of
HUMANKIND. Maybe we need a new classification for them.

Why it's time to redefine Australia Day

Why it's time to redefine Australia Day

"Macquarie – widely considered one of the more progressive early governors, not least in relation to making this land an economic asset for the empire and for his treatment of the colony's Aboriginal people – called the colony's celebration of itself “foundation day”.
By that first celebration of foundation day, Macquarie had already lost his patience with the local Indigenous people because of the threat they posed to the empire's new pastoral frontier by stealing stock and attacking the settlers who had taken their traditional lands.
In 1816 he’d ordered his troops to attack the Aboriginal people at Cow Pastures, south of Sydney, where they'd been playing havoc with the stock runners. Those who did not surrender as “prisoners of war”, Macquarie ordered, should be killed and the males hung up on trees as an example to others. It was a massacre."

The grind and grief behind the glitter

The grind and grief behind the glitter

How the so called Developed Countries are accomplices to horrible crimes of abuse and exploitation of Children in India and other countries.
That child labour is used to mine mica in India is known. The commissioner with the Indian government's National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, Yogesh Dube, recently visited Jharkhand and said: ''Child labour and trafficking are major issues in Jharkhand and it is high time that people understood.''
Two decades ago, in the face of environmental concerns and in an effort to regulate the mica industry, the government shut mines across the state, but the closures simply drove child labour further, literally and metaphorically, underground.
The organisation of the industry is intentionally opaque, said Kailash Satyarthi, founder of child rights organisation BBA. Those who work at the mine face are unaware of where their product ends up, and those who buy the mica are wilfully blind about where it comes from.

“The government of Indonesia underlines that any such violations … constitute a serious matter for the bilateral relations of the two countries.”
Agus said the Indonesian Navy already knew of the territorial breach by after a radar alert originating in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, earlier in the week.
“We need to boost our defense there and intensify our patrols to prevent further intrusions,” he said.
Indonesia also demanded formal clarification for the infringements through diplomatic channels and assurances that such incidents would not be repeated.
Jakarta has also demanded a halt to Australia’s military-led “Operation Sovereign Borders” until assurances are received that there will not be a repeat of such violations.

Is Australia in danger of becoming 'Asian white trash'? » The New Daily

There is a tremendous opportunity for Australia to establish itself as a ‘hinge nation’ for the future economic power bases in East and South Asian societies. Unfortunately, Australia has an image problem … and it’s doing us no favours, writes Andrew Macleod.

The end of human rights

The end of human rights

What the classical human rights movement has achieved is the recognition of each human being as the moral equal of all others. This is a massive feat. But the nationalist, authoritarian and conservative-religious backlash against the language and practices of secular human rights opens the need for alternative forms of mobilization, of which conventional human rights — meaning civil and political rights diffused from the West — will be just one part.
